Alternative Fun Facts: Mesopotamian Hell
Why the Ancient Mesopotamians Tried So Hard to be Good | Fiction | Fresh Soup
The ancient cultures of Mesopotamia believed that hell is identical to our world in every way except one: the dead are permitted to say anything they wish once they get there, but they can only say each sentence, phrase, or word exactly once. Words are tossed out of their mouths like used tissues: they flutter through the air and then vanish into hell’s wastepaper basket forever. Imagine a world in which you can say “I love you” or “I’ve never felt this way about anyone” only once in your lifetime. And not just the brief lifetime of a heavy smoker with bad genes who won’t make it past sixty anyway, but once in the truly eternal afterlife.
