A few days ago, I ran into a producer I hadn’t seen for a few years. “Wow!” he hollered, and I looked around in confusion to see what he was so excited about. “You look great!” he said, “how much have you lost?” I told him that since my mother’s death, I hadn’t had much of an appetite and I’d lost thirty pounds. “My condolences,” said the producer. Then he added, “About your mother, not the diet. Me, after my mom died, I gained six pounds. I think it was from all the cookies I scarfed down during the shiva.”
