In an introductory class I took at college, I learned about how the Industrial Revolution in Europe influenced the evolution of the peppered moth. The vast majority of these moths used to be white, and they could easily camouflage themselves, for example on walls of houses. But the pollution and soot brought on by the Industrial Revolution turned the walls dark, leaving the white moths exposed to predators. A white moth on a black wall—the end was tragically predictable. And so they quickly evolved to be darker.
